Home Insurance Quotes

When the Insurance Underwriters price Home Insurance, there are lots of factors they have to take into account.

Here are just a few of them. They will all affect the price of your home insurance quote:

  • Is your home a semi, detached or terraced? Other things being equal, your home insurance will be cheaper if its detached. Terraced are relatively speaking the most expensive to insure.
  • When was your house built? The newer your house the cheaper the insurance quote will be.
  • Is your house constructed traditionally? ("Traditionally" means constructed of brick or stone with some form of slate, stone or tile roof - if you have a thatched cottage, expect to pay a lot more!)
  • How much would your house cost to rebuild? The cost is primarily determined by the size of your house and the construction costs in your area. - Mortgage Rates - Most insurance companies will automatically calculate this cost for you based on the number of rooms you have and their up to date information on rebuilding costs in your area. If your house has been surveyed recently, make sure you use the cost of rebuilding recommended by the surveyor. Always keep the Surveyors letter on file so you have documentary proof of the recommended rebuilding cost.
  • Is your property in a good state of repair? The better its state of repair, the lower your quote will be. This is important because, lets say your chimney collapsed due to lack of maintenance and you claimed on your insurance - your insurer will probably pay for the internal damage caused by the falling bricks but its unlikely theyll pay to rebuild the chimney. In extreme cases of neglect, they may even refuse the entire claim.
  • Geological aspects. For example, is there a history of land slip or settlement in your immediate area? Settlement affects your foundations and can be a big problem in peaty or heavy clay areas. Problems of land slip are more commonly found in houses built on slopes or on the coast.
  • Is your home in an area which has a history of flooding? Most insurance companies will be able to identify this problem from your post-code. In areas with a bad history of flooding, many insurers will load your premium or even decline to provide a quote.
  • Mining areas - is your home built in an area which has been subject to underground mining? Premiums are inevitably higher in mining areas - thats why its so important to get the cheapest quote you can find.

Now you know some of the factors which affect your home insurance premium, please do not be tempted to manipulate the information you provide on your application for home insurance. You might get away with a lower premium but If you do ever have a claim, the insurer is likely to send out a Loss Adjuster to inspect your property. If the Loss Adjuster finds that the information you provided on your application is incorrect, the insurer may invalidate, or reduce, the value of your claim. Please dont try to cheat the system, as if you do, youll be the looser!! (mortgage quotes)
